Barbados planning guide

Which coast of Barbados is right for you?

A practical comparison of the west, south, east and north coasts.

Barbados is compact, but the coast changes quickly. The west coast usually gives visitors the calmest, most polished beach experience. The south coast is livelier and easier without a car. The east coast is dramatic, windy and built around scenery and surf rather than dependable swimming. The north coast is rugged and best explored as a road trip.

Choose the west coast for

Calmer water, sunset, villas, refined hotels and easy access to Holetown or Speightstown.

Choose the south coast for

Restaurants, nightlife, frequent public transport, family-friendly public beaches and a more energetic holiday base.

Choose the east coast for

Surf, walking, photography and a completely different view of Barbados. Treat swimming with caution.

Choose the north coast for

Cliffs, caves, fishing communities and quiet viewpoints. A hire car or guided tour is usually the easiest way to explore.
