Animal Flower Cave in one minute
Come for the cave, cliffs and Atlantic drama—not for a conventional beach day
Animal Flower Cave at North Point is one of Barbados’s most distinctive natural attractions. Official Barbados tourism information describes it as the island’s only accessible sea cave, opening directly onto the Atlantic with natural pools inside that may be suitable for swimming when the sea is calm.
The surrounding cove is not somewhere to plan a normal swim-and-sunbathe day. This is exposed north-coast cliff country: powerful swell, limestone shelves, spray and huge views. Treat the cave tour, clifftop and lunch as the experience; regard swimming inside the cave as a conditions-dependent bonus.
Why it belongs on an itinerary
The north coast at its most dramatic
Sea cave
The cave opens directly to the Atlantic through natural “windows” in the limestone. Barbados Tourism describes Animal Flower Cave as the island’s only accessible sea cave.
Clifftop views
The exposed cliffs and broad Atlantic horizon feel completely different from the resort coastline farther south and west.
Natural pools
Water collects inside the cave and some pools are deep enough to swim in when conditions permit. The attraction explicitly describes cave access as “waves permitting”.
Why it earns a place on this site: it shows the opposite side of the postcard version of Barbados—rugged limestone, Atlantic force and a landscape shaped by water rather than beach clubs.
Below the cliffs
What it is like inside Animal Flower Cave
Guided visits descend from the clifftop into a natural sea cave with pools, rock formations and openings looking directly onto the Atlantic. The cave gets its name from the sea anemones historically found in its pools—the “animal flowers”.
Barbados Tourism notes green and brown colouring within the cave associated with oxidation of copper and iron, while the openings create changing views depending on light, swell and spray.
This is not a polished indoor show cave with a flat walkway. Expect steps, wet surfaces and uneven rock. That natural character is part of the attraction—and the reason footwear and mobility matter.
Photography tip: the ocean-framed openings are the strongest shots. Keep phones and cameras secure around wet rock.

The question everyone asks
Can you swim at Animal Flower Cave?
Sometimes—inside the cave, not in the exposed cove outside. The attraction currently promotes swimming in its underground pools, but cave access is explicitly dependent on wave conditions.
When swimming happens
On suitable days, guides may allow swimming in the cave pools. Bring swimwear and a towel if you want the option.
When it does not
Rough Atlantic swell can make cave access or swimming unsuitable. “Waves permitting” is central to how a sea cave works.
The open cove
Do not treat the surrounding coast as a casual swimming beach. Rock shelves, surge and cliff exposure make this fundamentally different from Carlisle Bay or Accra.
Let the guide make the call. Never bypass a closure because somebody swam there on a previous visit.
Current planning information
Opening hours and prices
The attraction’s own website currently lists the following information. Because wave conditions can change access, check directly before making the long drive north specifically for the cave.
Closed Monday: the attraction’s own current site lists Tuesday–Sunday. Some tourism listings show different hours, so use the attraction’s direct site or telephone number as the final check.
Do not rush back to the car
Make lunch part of the visit
The clifftop restaurant is one of the reasons Animal Flower Cave works better as a relaxed northern stop than a quick photo opportunity. The attraction currently serves lunch Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00am–3:30pm.
The attraction says its Caribbean-style menu uses locally sourced ingredients, and the restaurant gives you a way to enjoy the north-coast setting even if somebody in your group decides the cave steps are not for them.
Best plan: do the cave first when conditions are good, then have lunch. If the sea affects access, the clifftop and restaurant still give the journey a purpose.

Above the cave
What else makes North Point worth the drive?
Watch the Atlantic
North Point gives you a rougher, wider ocean view than the sheltered west coast. On big-swell days the spectacle above ground may be the highlight.
Whales in season
Official Barbados tourism material notes reported humpback-whale sightings from the clifftop around February to April. Treat this as a possible bonus, not a guarantee.
Build a north-coast drive
Pair the cave with Little Bay or River Bay instead of driving to North Point for one quick stop.
Know the physical side first
Steps, footwear and accessibility
The cave portion involves descending into a natural environment with steps, uneven rock and potentially wet surfaces. It will not suit every visitor, and staying above ground is a perfectly valid way to enjoy the location.
Footwear
Wear shoes or sandals with secure grip. Smooth flip-flops are a poor choice for wet, uneven rock.
Mobility
If stairs, balance or uneven surfaces are difficult, contact the attraction before travelling and ask what part of the current route is realistic for you.
Children
Children who are comfortable with caves and steps may love it, but adults should keep them close around cliff edges, wet rock and pools.
Do not improvise around cliff edges. Stay within established visitor areas and respect barriers or staff instructions.

Questions travellers ask
Animal Flower Cave Barbados FAQs
Is Animal Flower Cave a beach?
Not in the conventional sense. It is a rugged Atlantic cliff site centred on a sea cave, clifftop scenery and natural cave pools rather than a sandy swimming beach.
Can you swim in Animal Flower Cave?
Yes when conditions permit. The attraction promotes swimming in its underground pools, but cave access is explicitly waves permitting. Follow the guide’s decision on the day.
Can you swim in the cove outside?
We would not treat the exposed cove as a normal swimming beach. North-coast swell, rock shelves, surge and cliffs make this very different from sheltered swimming beaches.
What are the current opening hours?
The attraction’s own website currently lists Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30am–4:00pm, waves permitting. Check directly before travelling because other listings show different hours.
How much does it cost?
The attraction’s current website lists BDS $40 for adults and BDS $20 for children under 12. Recheck before your visit.
Why is it called Animal Flower Cave?
The name comes from sea anemones found in the cave pools, known as “animal flowers”.
Is there a restaurant?
Yes. The attraction currently lists lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00am to 3:30pm.
Is it suitable for children?
Many children will enjoy it, but the visit involves steps, uneven natural surfaces and proximity to cliffs and water. Parents should judge the route against each child’s confidence and mobility.
Is it accessible for limited mobility?
The underground route involves steps and uneven, potentially wet rock, so it will not suit everyone. Contact the attraction directly to discuss the current route.
Can you see whales?
Barbados Tourism notes reports of humpback whales from the northern lookout around February to April. Treat it as a possibility, not a guarantee.
Is it worth the drive?
Yes if you want to see a very different side of Barbados. The best visit combines the cave, clifftop views and lunch with another northern stop.
